ALEXANDER TATE
Alex was called to the bar in May 2025 after practising as a solicitor at the Australian Government Solicitor for 13 years. As a solicitor, Alex acted for a range of Commonwealth agencies and regulatory bodies such as the ACCC, ASIC, Australian Taxation Office, IP Australia and the Therapeutic Goods Administration including in several high profile and sensitive matters. Alex specialised in regulatory law and enforcement work with a focus on competition and consumer law and financial services regulation. His practice also focused on mergers, corporations law, intellectual property and administrative law.
Alex holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Information Technology (Majoring in Software Design). Alex has a keen interest in technology and a working knowledge of programming languages including C, C++ and Java as well computer and telecommunications network systems and design. Alex was formerly a member of the Branch Executive Committee of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Computer Society and is a current member of that society. Alex also has an interest in the development of competition and consumer law and sits on the competition and consumer law committees of each of the Law Council of Australia and the Queensland Law Society.
Prior to working as solicitor, Alex was an Associate to the Hon. Justice Logan RFD of the Federal Court of Australia. Alex was also the Director of the Brisbane office of the Australian Government Solicitor.
Alex’s areas of practice include administrative law, bankruptcy and insolvency, class actions, all areas of commercial law with a focus on competition and consumer, corporations, mergers and intellectual property law, regulatory and enforcement matters, negligence, public law matters including commissions, examinations, inquiries and inquests, taxation and technology matters.
